Nominees: 2016 Independent Spirit Awards

Carol

The Independent Spirit Award nominees have been announced, and it’s Todd Hayne’s Carol leading the pack with six nominations including Best Feature and Best Female Lead for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. This is a telling sign for the Oscars, where Blanchett was reportedly being pushed for supporting, so maybe priorities will change following this announcement.

Spotlight, one of the other big Oscar contenders this year, is close behind with five nominations, tied with Beasts of No Nation – perhaps one of the surprise awards hopefuls considering how little it is known beyond the festival circuit.

Now in its 31st year, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is an annual celebration honoring artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody independence and originality. The Spirit Awards recognizes the achievements of American independent filmmakers and promotes the finest independent films of the year to a wider audience. The winners of the Spirit Awards are voted upon by Film Independent and IFP Members.
